Today, we will be discussing trash. I know that doesn't sound exciting, but it can actually save you quite a lot of money! The trick is getting your stored items into as small of a space as possible. This will enable you to rent a smaller unit and pay less per month. It can also save quite a bit of time when moving in and out of your unit.
First, you'll want to go through your items, and sort them into four categories:
1. Trash – this is the stuff that is not worth anything to you or anyone else. Just dispose of it now. Don't spend the time and effort to pack and move this stuff or pay for a larger storage unit to store rubbish. Just dispose of it in a responsible manner, and you'll start saving immediately.
2. Items to sell – We can all use a bit of extra money, so sell what you can. If you have a lot of items to sell, you can have a garage sale. Otherwise, if you don't have the time or enough items for a garage sale, you can list the items on Craigslist for free. People will call you, come look at your items, pay you, and haul it off. Craigslist is a great tool! Of course, always take appropriate precautions before meeting strangers from the internet.
3. Good items to give away – Some stuff you may not be able to sell or may not want to sell, but it is still too good to throw away.
· Give to friends, family, neighbors, acquaintances. Perhaps you have an item with sentimental value that you no longer want. Give it to someone else who will treasure it! Perhaps someone you know is setting up housekeeping and can use small household items that you no longer need. Or maybe your neighbor has always liked those yard decorations. Give them away!
· Donate items to a charitable organization such as St Vincent de Paul, Goodwill, Salvation Army, ReStore, AmVets, etc. Some of these organizations will even come out to pick up your donation. With these charitable organizations, you can get a donation receipt that may be eligible for a tax deduction.
4. Good items that you want to keep – this is what you will actually pack up to store in your unit.
By sorting your items before you move them, you are able to dispose of some things, and donate or sell others. In addition to being able to rent a smaller unit, this is going to mean less work hauling your items to the storage unit by either reducing your number of trips or getting a smaller moving truck. Once again, you save both time and money.
When you are moving out of your storage unit, please give your 30 day notice, move out all your stored possessions, stand up any pallets you used, sweep the unit, and lock it with the provided green lock.
